Machu Picchu and the Lares Valley 2022

A 7 night yoga retreat in the Peruvian Andes. We will collect you at Cusco airport, before taking you into Cusco historical centre and beginning our spiritual wellness yoga retreat.  We will practice different styles of yoga throughout the week and participate in Andean esoteric ceremonies, as well as hike in some of the most beautiful areas in Peru. There will also be an emphasis on local food and farming. All this, and a visit to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. This will all be will be with professional hiking and mountain guides, yoga teachers and wonderful hotels and lodges.

Day 1: Arrival 

We each make our own way into Cusco airport to convene and begin our yoga retreat. Today, as we adjust to the altitude, we will have a healing yoga class, recovering from the flight and stretching the limbs, and also an introductory workshop on "The Pillars of Wellness". Afterwards we will have dinner at Pachapapa in San Blas and spend the evening getting to know each other.  


Day 2: Exploring Cusco

Our morning begins with Sun Salutations for an energetic start to the day. After breakfast at the hotel, we will leave for a round-trip hike to the Temple of the Moon where we will attend a K’intu (Coca leaf) initiation ceremony, followed by a gentle guided meditation. In the afternoon we’ll enjoy lunch at Green’s Organic in Cusco before returning to the hotel for a superfood workshop: ‘Introduction to Andean Superfoods and the Magic of Peruvian Food Culture’. We follow the workshop with a visit to the authentic local San Pedro Market to learn about the top 10 Andean superfoods, their properties, and different ways to prepare them in order to activate their nutrients. While at the market you can try some local juices or check out the shaman kiosks. In the evening there will be a short trip briefing, before we end our day with dinner at Mutu.

Day 3: Pisac and Viacha

Before breakfast today we have a yoga session that focuses on stretching our wrists, shoulders, hips and backs to loosen up our bodies and minds. After that we depart for the Sacred Valley. We start with a visit to the town of Pisac, with its market, incredible archaeological site and botanical gardens, before continuing to the village of Viacha to participate in traditional Andean farming practices alongside members of the local community. The Andean communities are well known for their potatoes and Peru has around 4,000 types of potato. Lunch will be apachamanca, a traditional Andean dish., which will give us the energy needed for our hike to the Pisac archaeological site. After a guided tour of the site we take a scenic drive to our next hotel, Lamay Lodge. In the evening a restorative yoga session will help us re-center ourselves by integrating the multiple energies received during our full-day journey, and our day will end with dinner and our daily trip briefing.

Day 4: The Lares Valley

Today’s early morning session is ashtanga, an energizing and dynamic practice. Following breakfast we have a wellness workshop at the lodge: 'Ayurveda for Life' — Ayurveda is known as the life science that is complementary to yoga. During this workshop we will explore our doshas (body and mind constitutions) and examine modifications to lead us towards a more well-rounded lifestyle.

Next we make our journey to the Lares Valley, one of the most beautiful in the area where we will have a choice of afternoon activities:

Activity A - An excursion to meet the expert textile weavers of the Choquecancha community, including an introduction to Andean natural textile dyes and coca leaf reading. The community has been weaving in this fashion for hundreds of years. The site is also a living Inca town, one of only 2 left in Peru. 

Activity B -  A relaxing hike from Cuncani to Huacahuasi Lodge. This is a great option for people that want to get out and see more of the flora and fauna of the Andes. 

In the evening we reconverge for a wellness workshop back at our lodge: 'Pranayama Breathing', a Pranayama technique workshop to guide our bodies and minds into a deep state of relaxation. Finally, we share dinner and hold our daily briefing.

Day 5: Marcacocha and Pumamarka

This morning’s session focuses on the Mysore Ashtanga yoga method, which offers the opportunity for a personalized posture sequence adapted to each individual student. After breakfast we will take a scenic drive to the Marcacocha archaeological site to attend a Pachamama ceremony. Pachamama is the Quechua term for Mother Earth. From there we travel to Pumamarka by car, to explore the site and enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon a gentle, mostly downhill hike brings us to Ollantaytambo, the second of the living Inca villages where we will make our way to the lodge in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Following the day’s activities we will relax into a philosophy workshop: ''The Heart of Yoga', a discussion about the eight limbs of  yoga, including ethical principles like yamas and niyama. The day ends with our usual meal and briefing.

Day 6: Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu

We start today with another session of Mysore Ashtanga yoga, continuing our individual posture sequence exploration. Following breakfast we make our visit to the Ollantaytambo archaeological site, where we will spend the morning before taking a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu town, including lunch on board. We will spend time in the afternoon exploring the citadel of Machu Picchu with our professional guide, and learn about some of the historical theories surrounding the site. You can take time to sit and soak up the atmosphere in this mystical site. In the evening we will check in at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, where we will have dinner and our daily trip briefing.

Day 7: Mandor Natural Reserve

In the early morning we will have the chance to take a stroll through the lush orchid gardens and tea plantation around our hotel. You will even catch a hummingbird or two.  After breakfast we leave for our hike to Mandor natural reserve, where we will participate in an energizing Sun Salutations variations practice. At the end of the session, we will revisit the Circle of Life to examine the attainment of our wellness experience intentions. The afternoon brings a scenic train ride as we travel from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where private transport will take us from there back to Cusco. Our penultimate day ends with us sharing a farewell dinner.

Day 8: The Journey Home

We say our goodbyes and are taken back to the airport. If you wish to extend your holiday you can add a visit to Lake Titicaca, the Amazon, or somewhere else in South America.


The Sacred Valley and Lares Valley 

We will spend time in different lodges in the Sacred Valley and the Lares Valley. Each lodge has been specially designed and fit with the local area and provides a luxurious base for our adventure. Focusing on sustainability, all lodges employ a large amount of local staff.  


In Cusco, we will spend time in the El Retablo hotel in the historical centre of the town. Each room has been individually painted and decorated by a local artist.

How much yoga will we do?

In general we will have 2 classes a day, one in the morning of 90 minutes and one in the afternoon of 60 to 90 minutes that may also include meditation. You do not need to take both classes every day however, it's up to you.

Do I need to be a yoga expert?

These yoga retreats are for any standard of yogi from absolute beginner to expert. We host two groups separated by experience and confidence, and we will decide what group you are in the first day. If you'd later like to swap between the two just let us know. In addition, if you would like to travel with a non-yogi, ask us about special pricing.

Are all meals vegetarian/vegan?

We cater for all dietary requirements, and while some of our centres will be 100% vegetarian, most will have vegan and non-vegan options. When we have lunch or dinner out however, you can eat whatever you like. Do let us know any preferences.

Do you provide visas?

We do not provide visas, but we can help you if you do require one.

Do you include international air tickets?

We do not include these as our guests come from all over the world, but with our many years experience in this field we can help find the best routing for you.

Can I have a single room?

You can have a guaranteed single room by paying the single supplement.

Can I share a room?

If you would prefer not to pay the single supplement you can share a room with a person of the same sex. We will pair you with a room partner.

What should I bring?

Every guest is required to bring their own yoga mat. Otherwise, ask us about packing lists for each specific destination. We will supply blocks, straps and blankets.
